• Loaded language: Words like “scrounger,” “workshy,” and “sponger” do their work before you even read the article.
• Stock images: Always someone in pyjamas, curtains drawn, mug in hand—lazy shorthand for “undeserving.”
• “Reality” TV: Shows like Benefits Street and On Benefits and Proud are edited to confirm every stereotype.

Why It Works

Because most people don’t know anyone living on benefits—or if they do, they’ve been conditioned to see them through this lens.

It’s simple psychology:
If they can make you resent your neighbour for getting £350 a month, you won’t notice the billionaires siphoning off your taxes.

The Real Agenda

This isn’t about “informing the public.” It’s about softening you up for cuts.
Make the public believe the system is being “abused,” and they’ll cheer when it’s dismantled—right up until they need it themselves.

The Human Cost

This rhetoric isn’t harmless. It leads to:

• Hate crimes against disabled people.
• People too scared to claim the help they’re entitled to.
• Society treating us as less than human.

And once that narrative is set, it’s almost impossible to undo.
